Opening Gambit Merlot 2015, Oliver, BC - Checkmate Artisanal Winery
Tasted July 10th 2021
Note: After tasting Black Rook 2014, and Silent Bishop 2014, they pulled out this bottle. Not sure if it was a temporary break from sensory tiredness, this was refreshingly bright, ripe, and pretty.
First Impression: Bright medium ruby colour with a purple hue, bright, ripe, and fresh aromas with lots of black fruit and floral nose and a suggestive complexity.
Flavours: Blackcurrant, Blackberry, blueberry jam, bramble, violet, lavender, black tea, milk chocolate, well integrated oak.
Structure: Lifted refreshing acidity, creamy medium plus body, rich, firm tannins and a long exciting and flavourful finish.
