Ornellaia 2013
Once every now and then, we feel the craving for an out-of-ordinary indulgence.
We would go out of our way to search for and uncover from the depths of our dust-collected memories and the breadth of our most daring imaginations.
Set the mood, manifest an excuse, “ohm” our way into submission for a higher calling.
And then somehow the door manages to open up to an even more utopian universe.
Ornellaia 2013 is one of those pleasures that you initially make excuses for but immediately found salvation from guilt.
Lots and lots of vibrant fruits, youthful yet substantial. Blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, strawberry, blossoming rose, and violet flawlessly delivered in a soothing, fragrant manner. Of that youthful but educated determination, it is laced with sophisticated maturity of mushrooms, truffles, cloves, smoked meat, peppery spices, stewed tea leaves, and fresh mint. Tannins is thick and velvety with subtly substantial acidity to support that stream of fresh fruits, beautifully balanced with elegantly toned structure. With all this richness, they don’t tire, don’t come in waves, don’t come in flare, just a constant stream of ever lasting harmonious statement. In a way it is kind of like sanskrit where one symbol is worth a thousand words.
If this wine is drinking this way already now, it makes me wonder what it will be like decades from now.
